In the traditions of our people during the time of the Makahiki the akua lono is adorned by the aliʻi nui as a symbol of releasing his power over the people to the akua. The aliʻi wahine would adorn the akua with a malo. This part of the ceremony is call hoʻolei akua. We recognize that lono is the wind, rain, the grey clouds, and is symbolized in this time of year by those elements. We mahalo Ke Akua for the creation of those elements and allowing our kūpuna to live and flourish because of their ability to observe and utilize those elements to create an abundant society.
